Balloons and a clown at Tolmers Carnival 1975.
‘Vince was my oldest brother and I often visited him when he lived at Tolmers Square. In the photo with the clown he is wearing my (Convent) school boater – which suited him much better than it did me. As a young teenager it was a great place to visit, always full of interesting people and lively conversations. I learned how to deal with bailiffs and to question my prejudices. Also some challenges – no door to the loo on the stairs, a mummified cat nailed to the back of his kitchen door, a girlfriend who liked to pee in a potty in public. He discovered that he was diabetic while living there and ate a diet from a Buddhist monk (I think) of brown rice and aduki beans with pumpkin and lots of tamari sauce. This to me is the taste of Tolmers Square.’
