Awayday to Blackpool

In 1975, British Rail were offering cheap ‘awayday’ tickets at the weekend. We spotted a special offer for a day return from Euston to Blackpool for £1. This was too good to miss so we bought tickets.

Five friends (Patrick, Cora, Sacha, Doug and Richard ) set off from 117 Drummond Street, rather bleary eyed, at 8 am and walked to Euston station 100 yards away.

The journey was incredibly slow as the train took all kinds of diversions and slow tracks and eventually pulled into Blackpool at about 1 pm.

However the sun was shining and we walked to the seafront. We took off our shoes and socks, paddled in the sea and wrote rude messages in the sand.

We had some horrible fish and chips in a café.

We posed for our group photograph in a shelter.

Then we made our way back to the station and got on the train to Euston for the 6-hour trip back to London.

We trudged from Euston back to Drummond Street, tired but happy (but didn’t repeat this).
