Food co-op

In 1974 some squatters set up a food co-op in Drummond Street. This involved an early morning trip to the nearby Covent Garden wholesale fruit and vegetable market nearby. A selection of everyday items like tomatoes, mushrooms, lettuce, carrots and onions were bought. Back in Drummond Street an informal shop displayed the goods and sold them at cost to local residents. This was obviously much cheaper than buying from shops. Part of the attraction was the proximity of Covent Garden market. When the market moved to Nine Elms in 1976 the co-op came to an end.
