The forces at work: Stock Conversion
The major landowner is Stock Conversion & Investment Trust. They are a giant property development company run by Joe Levy. They operate through a network of subsidiary companies.
They have already destroyed and redeveloped many other areas including our neighbours west of the Hampstead Road.
They have been quietly amassing property in Tolmers Village for over 10 years. They have been deliberately allowing their property to become derelict, to decay, and even collapse while people were still living in it. They have been demolishing property and leaving sites vacant.
Stock Conversion are also active right up Camden High Street and are at this moment evicting the tenants association from 220.
In 1971 Stock Conversion proposed a deal to Camden Council for the whole of Tolmers Village, under which:
Camden gets land cheaply for housing in site B.
subsidised by (apparent land cost) £3.5m
Stock Conversion gets planning permission for 250,000 square feet of offices and 120 square feet of commercial space on site A
Profits £20m
People of Tolmers Village get redeveloped.
Nobody asked us what we wanted.
