Danielle studied ArchItecture at the Bartlett from 1973, graduating and qualifying for RIBA membership in 1980.

She spent much of the undergraduate years living in Tolmers, opening up a number of squats to make homes for homeless people and playing an active role in campaigning against property speculation.

She left London for Liverpool where she worked as a project architect, designing housing with community participation for the city’s pioneering housing co-ps. She also worked in Bristol with community groups, some who took on heritage listed buildings and converted them as community centres. Returning to Liverpool in 1986, she worked up a project to convert Blackburn House, an 18th/19th school (in fact the first public girls school in England) into a centre for women, a project addressing women’s economic exclusion, which remains meaningful to the present day. This led to a role within Liverpool’s City Challenge and various EU projects in community based urban regeneration.

Teaching part time as a sessional tutor at Liverpool University she ran projects in participatory community urban design, later teaching this at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. While there, she assisted with research into housing for the elderly (1996-98).

After some 15 years as a community architect, she took a sabbatical and studied ceramics at the University of Tasmania. Eventually she settled in Tasmania where she worked for 15 years as a heritage advisor for Hobart City Council then for Heritage Tasmania.

Currently she is studying painting at the University of Tasmania, exploring the theme of identity and place.

Peaceful protester

by Danielle Pacaud

There were those who dreamed of barricades and molotov cocktails, and I would idly wish someone would blow up Euston Tower when it blocked the sky from the windows where I lived. But truly we were peaceful protesters and within the law.
