Professor Reyner Banham was a popular lecturer and tutor at the Bartlett in the early 1970s.

He was a strong supporter of student-led projects including the student organised XSES week in 1972 when the School’s relationship with the Tolmers area began. See the Bartlett factor.

He was one of the signatories to the 1973
Stop the Levy Deal Campaign and mentioned Tolmers positively in several of his regular New Society articles.

His daughter Debby became a squatter in Tolmers Village and the Banham family were close friends with several of the squatters thoughout the 1970s and afterwards. Following several years in the United States they lived in a flat between Gower Street and Tottenham Court Road, equidistant from the old Bartlett building and Tolmers Square.

Reyner Banham died of cancer in 1988.
